Dr. Akinyele Umoja is an educator, author and activist. Currently, he is a Professor and former Department Chair of the Department of Africana Studies at Georgia State University. Umoja is the author of We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance and the Mississippi Freedom Movement. His research has also been featured in numerous academic journals and anthologies. As an activist he is a founding member of the New Afrikan People's Organization and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement.
Mama Tamu S. Kanyama, M.A. is an educator, lifetime movement builder, former political prisoner and COINTELPRO survivor. She is a founding member of African Community Centers for Unity and Self-Determination, a scientific approach to building unity. In 2012, she was honored with the naming of a school after her, Tamu Sana Kanyama Preparatory Academy of Creative Arts and Media Technology.
Baba Bilal Sunni-Ali is a veteran movement builder and famed musician from Gil Scott-Heron's Midnight Band. He is a founding member of the Bronx chapter of the Black Panther Party, conscious citizen of the Republic of New Afrika, member of the Imam Jamil Action Network, Prison Advocate, UNIA Ambassador and more. He teaches music to youth and uses it as healing therapy.
Dr. P. Qasimah Boston is an Adjunct Professor at the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, Chief Executive Officer of the Golden Rod Consulting, LLC, President of the Board of Directors of the Tallahassee Food Network, Inc., Co-Director of the Tallahassee Youth For Change Project, and Advisory Board member of the Moving Forward Network. Dr. Boston leads social science research teams to examine; health inequalities, food security, women's ability to cope with food insecurity, obesity and childhood obesity, community perspectives on healthcare and social determinants of health.
The overall goal of the Back to Our Roots series is to assist young people in making sense of our contemporary experiences within the contexts of history, Black resilience and agency.
